How Preserved Flowers Are Made
Preservation replaces natural plant sap with preserving agents via a multi-step process:
Harvest blooms at full bloom to retain optimal beauty and longevity.
Fully dehydrate flowers (processing time varies by variety).
Rehydrate with glycerinwater solution: either soak the blooms or stand them in jars of the solution for gradual absorption. The whole process takes 3weeks. Pigments may be added to the glycerin mixture for custom coloring. Alternatively, flowers can be bleached to remove chlorophyll, resulting in popular white and cream tones.Bleached preserved flowers are extremely fragile. They undergo harsh acidic treatments that lead to high wastage. Standard preserved flowers also see moderate product loss during production. This material loss explains why preserved flowers cost more than fresh cut flowers.
